The music and the dances

Many of our fans (hi, everyone!) are, like us, part of the SCA. Our first CD features music for dances that people can do and have already been doing at SCA events - and revels for live role-playing groups.

"European Court Dance"
"Middle Eastern Group Dance"
  • Black Nag: A 16th or 17th century English country dance for sets of three couples.

  • Hole in the Wall: A 17th (maybe even 18th or 19th) century English line dance for four or more couples.

  • "Korobushka": A 20th century folk dance from the Ukraine for any number of couples; often done in a circle. Also see the note below this table.

  • The Maltese Branle: A modern variation on the 16th century circle dance for any number of people; we're doing Schiarazula Marazula (the tune you're probably used to hearing already).

  • The Official Branle (or Le Branle Officiel): A modern variation on the 16th century circle dance for any number of couples. Also known as "Toss the Duchess" in the SCA (especially closer to the Atlantic).

  • Trenchmore: An 18th century line dance for sets of four or more couples; we play a set of three Irish jigs that you're just gonna love...

  • Algerian Stomp: A lively dance for sets of three people.

  • Andalusian Scarf Dance: A circle dance for any number of "slave girls" (who did similar dances in 10th century Andalusia).

  • Dueling Turks: A "macho stick dance" for two men to engage in mock battle. It starts slow, but look out... this dance is NOT for wimps!

  • Sepastia Bar: A circle dance for any number of people; starts off nice and easy, but it gets faster!

  • Shifting Sands: A slow walking dance for any number of people.

  • Tafta Hindi: A line dance for any number of couples. One or two people go down the center between the two lines during the solos.

  • Turkish Wedding Dance: A circle or line dance for any number of people.
The dances above (except the last one)
were choreographed by Sherifa el-Bakkar,
a former member of Peach Curry.

More about that fun "Russian dance"

From Ld Henry of Maldon: The version of Korobushka usually done in the SCA is approximately the same as the one in the wedding dance scene in The Deer Hunter. There are other versions.

From Master Del: I believe the correct pronunciation is kaRObushka. коробушка is the Cyrillic spelling, but an "o" in Russian in an unstressed position is pronounced as an "a" so you will often see the transliteration written as "Karobushka". Either would be correct. The pronunciation often heard in the SCA ("karoBUSHka") is incorrect.

"Out of Period"

While, officially, the scope of the SCA ends at 1600, dances documented as late as 1651 are deemed acceptable. When the band was deciding what songs to record, we went by popular consensus at the time such as we detected in Eastern Meridies (Georgia, Alabama, eastern Tennessee). Since then, our revels have included more 15th and 16th century dances and fewer from after the 17th century.

The steps to ALL of these dances are in the book that goes with the CD. (I do plan to eventually make this available as a PDF file; it's not a high priority on my to-do list.)
